How we calculate scores →About this gear
The original KR-S80 is an 80 Ws manual strobe with a circular flash tube and broad native flash coverage. Six power levels, optical triggering and a rotatable rear display are intended for direct control. A separate 3000-lumen continuous light supports short video sequences or focusing.
Consider before buying
There is no TTL. Check housing trigger and fibre-optic cable compatibility before ordering. Kraken’s description calls the video beam 100°, while its general beam table says 120° underwater; neither should be confused with the more-than-140° flash coverage. Confirm the video specification if it matters to your purchase.
Our take
Backscatter’s comparative guide praises the S80’s broad, even flash and glove-friendly controls, while noting its size and manual-only operation. That is useful evidence for a wide-angle shortlist, but it is a retailer assessment without an overall numeric score. Choose the S80 over the S80+ for the original broad flash pattern; consider the plus model when directed snoot lighting is the priority. The smaller S40 is easier to justify for close macro subjects where less energy and coverage are needed.
